No, you don’t need a migration agent to lodge your Partner Visa. Cue the dramatic gasp from the migration industry.
Before I continue, it’s important to say that migration agents and immigration lawyers absolutely have their place and are worth every cent when they are required to manage Partner Visas. Some of the situations where I would refer someone to have their application managed include when the case is complex, or if there are character concerns, health issues, compliance issues or just really complicated relationship histories.
For couples who don’t have these complexities and have relatively straight forward cases? You don’t need a migration agent to manage the case for you.
The Australian Partner Visa process might make you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained and really short on time for a while, but is it impossible? No.
The real question is: are you willing to put in the work?
Because this is where people get confused.
DIY-ing your Partner Visa is fine, but you need to be able to understand the criteria. It’s amazing (and sad) how much bad advice and information is out there.
You need to understand how to organise your evidence properly, how to prepare quality relationship statements, and actually take the time to build a decision-ready application.
A DIY Partner Visa does not mean throwing together 20 blurry screenshots, some bank statements, passports, one page love letters, and two statements from your friends who say that you’re a really cute couple.
The couples who usually struggle are not the ones without migration agents. They’re the ones who rush the process or don’t take the time to understand what Immigration is actually assessing.
A strong application requires a lot of effort and work regardless of whether you DIY it or use a migration agent to manage the application.

Most couples with “straightforward” cases already have the evidence
Oftentimes, couples panic because they think their relationship isn’t “good enough” for a Partner Visa. And interestingly, this is most often the couples who have already spent the time doing the groundwork, researching, and putting the application together.
On the other hand, the couples who give the least amount of time and energy to their Partner Visas are the ones who are overly confident and really underprepared.
For those well-prepared couples, the challenge isn’t that they don’t have the evidence, it’s knowing how to organise and present it properly. These are the couples I call “Partner Visa Academy Goals.” They’re the ones who have the evidence but are smart enough to realise that they may need guidance, structure, education, and support. And this is where having some level of support becomes really valuable.
So why do people still use migration agents?
There are a few reasons for this.
Some people simply don’t want to deal with all the paperwork themselves. Some couples are super busy or don’t want to carve out the time. Some have complex immigration histories. Some just want someone else handling communication with Immigration.
There’s nothing wrong with hiring a migration agent if that’s what feels right for you.
But there’s also nothing wrong with deciding, “We’re capable of doing this ourselves if we have the right support and resources.”

Why did we create the Partner Visa Academy?

Many couples don’t necessarily need full legal representation. They just need guidance, structure, examples, clarity and someone to explain the process in normal human language instead of sounding like a migration legislation textbook.

Can you trust migration agents?
I don’t live under a rock, so I know all about the hesitation and bad experiences some couples have had with migration agents.
Here’s a few tips I’ll give you when choosing or looking for a migration agent you can actually trust.
First, and this is really important, are they registered?
If someone is giving you immigration advice, they must be registered as a migration agent or immigration lawyer. You can find out if they are by checking the OMARA website: https://portal.mara.gov.au/search-the-register-of-migration-agents/

They should also have their photo next to their name. Because, sometimes people claim to be someone they’re not.
Secondly, is their business registered inside Australia?
Migration agent red flags
With the overload of information out there these days, it’s easy to get carried away and believe everything you read or see online.
Beware of websites that claim to help or provide advice on Partner Visas where you can’t find a MARN (Migration Agent Registration Number). These people or organisations are probably not Registered Migration Agents and should not be providing immigration advice.
What does the website look like? Does it look AI generated? And take a look at how long they have been generating content for. Do they have 20 blogs published in a span for a few months?
It’s taken the Partner Visa Academy years of creating content to establish the number of blogs that we have. This doesn’t happen overnight. But in the world of AI, were seeing so much of our content copied and used by websites that claim to help with Partner Visas. So do your due diligence.
The recent closure of Gold Migration is a timely reminder that trusting a migration agent is more than how big the firm is or the number of Google reviews a practice might have. If the closure teaches us anything, it’s that couples need to take a proactive and involved approach to their Partner Visas. Knowing the answers to questions like “can I have access to my application,” “how do I provide additional evidence if I need to,” “how are my documents stored and how can I access them if I need them,” “what happens if my agent or law firm ceases practising”?
It’s important that you as the applicant always have visibility over your application and understand that ultimately, the visa application responsibility is yours.
So should you hire a Migration Agent to manage your Partner Visa?
Well that’s completely up to you.
At the end of the day, nobody cares about your visa application as much as you do.
You know your relationship better than anyone else. You know your story, your history, your life together. If your case is straightforward and you’re willing to put in the effort, you absolutely can lodge your own Partner Visa.
You don’t need to be an immigration expert. You just need the right guidance, the right structure, and the willingness to do the work properly.
