Putting together a Partner Visa takes a lot of work, and sometimes by the end of the process couples feel they just want the application lodged. This is where I see mistakes happen, and this is where the importance of accuracy comes into it.
In this blog, I’m going to talk about why accuracy matters and how not being careful can impact your Partner Visa.
Accuracy and Partner Visas – is it really that important?
Yes – accuracy matters (a lot).
When you lodge a Partner Visa application, you’re not just filling out forms and guessing dates and timelines. You’re presenting a case, an argument forward that you should be granted a Partner Visa because you meet the requirements.
Every date, document, statement and form contributes to the overall picture of your relationship. And if things don’t quite line up? That’s where problems can start.
Will my application be cross-checked?
Yes.
Many couples assume the Department will read their relationship statements and take them at face value. In reality, Partner Visa applications are assessed very carefully – even scrutinised. Case officers compare the information across:
- Your visa application forms
- Your partner’s sponsorship form
- Relationship statements
- Witness statements
- Supporting documents
They are essentially checking that everything tells the same story.
If your relationship statement says you moved in together in June 2022, but your lease shows August 2022, that inconsistency will need to be addressed.
Sometimes it’s a simple mistake. But from the Department’s perspective, inconsistencies can create doubt.
In fact, some of the cases that I have seen land in hot water are the ones where they were just simple mistakes or a lack of attention. But they’ve just turned into something a lot bigger.
Small errors can lead to bigger issues
It’s easy to think that small details don’t matter, but they do. I’ll share examples of what I’ve seen in practice that has resulted in a request for more information.
One case was when a couple provided different dates that they met and the relationship had started. These dates again conflicted with the dates provided by their Form 888 witnesses.
In another case, the lease agreement for the couple was dated incorrectly which then contradicted the date they said they moved together.
And finally, another case where there was a lot of missing information in the forms which led to significant delays.
These are all couples who I met with at Freedom Migration (prior to my time at the Partner Visa Academy) and it’s always something I stress during an evidence planning session. Your evidence is key when it comes to your application, but it won’t matter if you have mistakes throughout your application.
Can accuracy help immigration assess my evidence?
Yes.
A strong Partner Visa application isn’t just about having loads of evidence. It’s about presenting the evidence clearly and consistently.
For example, if your relationship statement mentions living together, travelling together or reaching important relationship milestones, then your evidence should back those things up too.
When the details in your statements align with your documents, it makes it much easier for a case officer to understand your relationship.
And that’s exactly what you want.
Honesty is always the best approach
Never guess or over exaggerate details.
If you’re unsure about a date, it’s a good idea to first check your records before submitting your application. If you still can’t find a specific date you’re looking, you should make mention of that in your application.
Remember that your case officer is after honestly, accuracy and consistency – not perfection.
The Department isn’t looking for the “perfect couple”. They are looking for a genuine relationship.
