I’ve been talking a lot about Forms lately, and if you aren’t already across the basics of Partner Visa Forms, then I would recommend you have a read through the Forms overview blog, Form 80, Form 956, Form 1221 and Form 40SP blog.

But here, we’re going to talk about the most important of them all – the Form 47SP!

What is the Form 47SP?

This is the Visa Applicant’s application form (the person applying for the Partner Visa). Without this form, you’re not actually lodging a Partner Visa.

The Department of Home Affairs will ask detailed questions around your identity, family details, address history, travel history, your relationship details and your character history.

In my experience, when I talk about the Form 47SP, couples immediately think it’s a PDF form that’s downloaded. Although there are PDF versions of this form floating around the internet, it can only be submitted electronically via your Immi Account.

If you don’t have an Immi Account, then the first step for you is to set one up so that you can start to generate the Form. It’s a ‘fill as you go’ type form, so the more answers you input, the more sections that will open up.

I review at least 10 of these forms per month, so I’ve come up with a list of questions that are often answered incorrectly. A lot of the time, it’s because of the way the question on the Form 47SP is worded – it’s not always straightforward. But here’s a list of questions that I see couple’s get wrong, and hopefully it will help you ace the Form 47SP.

  1. Your usual country of residence

If you are lodging an onshore Partner Visa, then your usual country of residence is not going to be your home country, but rather the country you are living in at time of application.

Here is what the question looks like in the Immi Account:

Form 47SP question about your usual country of residence explained
  1. ‘Non-migrating members of the family unit’

There are three questions immigration asks around your family. The first is whether there are ‘migrating members of the family unit’. This means if you have members of your family who are also applying for the Partner Visa.

The next question is around ‘non-migrating members of the family unit’. Here is what the question looks like in the Immi Account:

Form 47SP question about Non-migrating members of the family unit explained

This is where applicant’s get confused. The definition of ‘family unit’ under immigration policy is different than what you and I may think of ‘family unit’. For Partner Visa purposes, you are only going to answer ‘yes’ to this question if you have dependent members of your family unit who are not applying for the visa. For example, if you have a child who is still dependent on you but for any reason is not being included in the visa application.

The final question around family is whether the applicant has ‘immediate family members’. This is your opportunity and the correct place to list details of your siblings and parents.

  1. There is a question towards the end of the form that asks if you have lived in any country (including Australia) for 12 months or more over the last 10 years.

In most cases, the applicant ticks ‘no’, but the answer should 99% of the time be ‘yes’. This question is asking if you as the applicant have been living in any country for 12 months or more.

Here is what the question looks like in the Immi Account:

From 47SP question about if you have lived in any country (including Australia) for 12 months or more over the last 10 years explained

This is a common worry. If there is information required that you just simply don’t have access to, then it would be in your best interests to upload a separate cover letter when you’re lodging your Partner Visa to explain what information you don’t have, and why.

A common scenario is when the Form 47SP is asking for information around immediate family members. You may not know the date of birth of your parents, or one of your siblings because you might have no contact with them/be estranged from them.

This is different to not wanting to obtain the information. For example, where the Department asks about your travel history over the last 10 years. Not completing this part of the form, or taking shortcuts here could potentially jeopardise your application. It’s in your best interests to make every effort to find out this information. For example, you can check flight itineraries, photographs, hotel bookings, correspondence you have had with friends and family around travel.

The good news is that you can start and stop the Form 47SP. It doesn’t need to be completed in one sitting as you can save the information and come back to it later.

The Form 47SP is a long form – so if you have ALL the information you need then I would probably put aside a few hours to complete it. If you don’t have all the information handy, it’s going to take you longer.

As part of the Academy, our Registered Migration Agents step you through each page of the Form 47SP and discuss what some of the more ‘confusing’ questions really mean.

If you’ve finished the Form 47SP then before submitting it you want to make sure that you have completed all other relevant forms, collated your documents, and have your application in a state that’s ready to lodge.

The final step of completing your Partner Visa is to submit your Form 47SP which will then allow you to upload your supporting documents and then pay the visa application charge.

Don’t panic! If you’ve made a mistake on the Form 47SP and you’ve realised after lodgement, then you can fix it. You will see in your Immi Account there is a tab on the left hand side called ‘Update Us’. Once you’ve clicked on that tab, you will then see another tab called ‘Notification of Incorrect Answers’. You can use that tab to explain what mistake was made, and what the correct information is.

You will see that in the Form 47SP, the Department wants information around the ‘four pillars of relationship’. If you’re not familiar with this term, I recommend you read my blog on the topic.

In the Form 47SP the Department only gives you a certain amount of characters you can use to complete this section. This is why I recommend that you simply write ‘Please refer to the Applicant and Sponsor’s Relationship Statements and supporting evidence uploaded to the Immi Account’.

This will prompt immigration that all this information is found in your Relationship Statements and you don’t need to repeat yourself on the Form 47SP.

As you know by now, forms are critical for your application. The Form 47SP is mandatory, so you can’t get around this requirement and it’s mandatory you complete it. It’s always a good idea to get your forms and application reviewed before lodging your Partner Visa.

We couldn't be happier with our experience working with the Partner Visa Academy. Before signing up, we felt super lost trying to navigate the partner visa process on our own - but from the moment we joined, every question we had was answered and all the resources gave us a lot of clarity. What stood out for us was how consistently supportive the team was throughout the entire process and how timely their responses were. That support has been there since the beginning stages and now continues even after lodgment. You can also tell that they really care about doing this right and not just checking boxes. They are always tweaking and updating things to keep up with the changes to the process, so that you're not stuck with old outdated info. For such a long complicated process this was huge! This was definitely the best path for us and we would highly recommend to any couple that is starting the partner visa process and feeling overwhelmed or in need of support.

Before applying for 820/801 visa, me and my partner were thinking of the best way to start this application. Did some research on how much will it cost if we go with Migration agent with the above visa, and it is seriously expensive. So, it's not an option for us. I started looking for alternative that can assist us with our visa application. That's when I saw The Partner Visa Academy through google. I checked their website and read some reviews. I booked a free assessment session with Joanne and she provided us of what are the essentials to make the application successful. The PVA, guided us from start to finish. The collection of all the necessary documentations, evidences, plus filling up forms. Thinking of all the stuff that needs to done can be stressful, however, with all the information that TPVA provided us, we manage to carry out all the tasks smoothly. The fun part of this journey is when you started collating all the evidences. How the relationship started, the memorable first date, the favourite food place you go, trip together local and international etc. This is also the time when you realised the ups and downs of your story as you go back to the history of the relationship. The Partner Visa Academy will provide all the important details you need to make this journey successful. All the materials are ready for you to watch and read. If unclear with any information, they are ready to answer you questions. Applying for Partner visa is not an easy task when you do it yourself. So, make sure you find the right people to assist you with this journey. Do I recommend The Partner Visa Academy? 101% YES!! Double Grant!! Thank you Rofia, Joanne and the rest of TPVA team... I couldn’t recommend Partner Visa Academy highly enough! My fiancé and I used them for our 820 application, and we truly couldn’t have done it without their guidance. Partner visas are incredibly expensive already, and the Partner Visa Academy helped us keep costs lower than they would have been if we used an immigration lawyer. Rofia is professional, knowledgeable, responsive and always so helpful whenever we had questions. After a 20 month wait, I’m absolutely thrilled to have been granted my 820 visa! We’re so grateful for all your help and couldn’t recommend Partner Visa Academy enough to anyone beginning their own partner visa journey.

We would fully recommend the Partner Visa Academy to other couples. The course is comprehensive. It’s not just videos, but written information, graphics, fact sheets and templates, which covers each step of the process. Rofia was brilliant throughout. Always very responsive, knowledgeable and friendly. We also found the evidence planning session incredibly insightful as it helped us plan ahead and organise our evidence in line with Home Office expectations.

Amazing experience with The Partner Visa Academy. Their resources are really helpful for putting together a complete partner visa application: the videos on the platform, the templates for structuring each document, and the personalised support they give by email and through the Facebook group have all been key. This is especially useful, because a lot of questions come up during the process, and it can be quite stressful and overwhelming. Having someone to turn to makes a real difference, and in my case that person has been Rofia and her team. I've already submitted my partner visa application and I'm currently on a bridging visa, waiting for approval, which can take a while. But they keep supporting you after you've submitted, explaining what steps to follow while you wait. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend partner visa academy!! Rofia and Joanne have been super helpful and trustworthy from the start. We received clear guidance on how to start the application with documented videos so we could go at our own pace. When we were about to submit, the partner visa academy gave us support on how to make our application stronger. When we submitted the first update, they gave us indications reassurance on how to do that as well. Every step of the way I feel like i got the support I needed, the process of applying felt A LOT easier with their help. Now I’m applying for the PR and couldn’t be happier with the support I’ve received!! 10/10 🫶

Couldn’t recommend The Partner Visa Academy enough. Our case was a little different from a standard application, and Rofia handled it with real urgency and care. Communication was great throughout, and she helped us get the completed application over the line. Can’t thank her enough for the support and guidance along the way.

The Partner Visa Academy honestly made mine and my partners process so much easier. With the help of Rofia and the team we were able to collect all our evidence and submit our visa in less than 2 months. Especially doing the Visa DIY I would highly recommend having that extra help from them so you aren’t stuck on simple points.
