If you’re preparing your Partner Visa, you might have this idea that there’s a ‘perfect’ way to do it. Here comes the good news – there’s no such thing as the perfect way to prepare your Partner Visa.
Good ways? Efficient ways? Easier ways? Yes. But perfect, no.
Why can preparing a Partner Visa feel so exhausting?
If you’re here reading this, you’re probably deep into your Partner Visa research. You may not have even started putting the application together yet and you’re feeling over it already.
So many couples believe that Partner Visa perfection is the goal. No wonder why it can feel overwhelming to start. There’s so much information out there on online forums and social media about Partner Visas. There’s checklists that feel absolute rather than flexible. There’s stories of refusals without proper content. There’s seeing other couples’ evidence and assuming yours needs to look the same. All of this creates the idea that Immigration expects every relationship to follow one neat formula.
They don’t.
What couples think a ‘perfect’ Partner Visa looks like
Most couples think that having a perfect Partner Visa looks like:
- Living together for years and years
- Having joint bank accounts
- Having both names on every document and bill
- No periods of separation
- Hundreds of photographs
So when a couple’s evidence doesn’t align with the above, it causes panic or, in most cases, delay in applying for a Partner Visa entirely.
What Immigration is actually assessing?
They’re not looking for perfection – they’re looking for genuineness.
The case officer is assessing your relationship against the criteria for a Partner Visa which includes whether you are in a genuine and continuing de facto or spousal relationship. They are cross checking your evidence across forms, relationship statements, witness statements. They’re checking that your relationship timeline matches your overall relationship history. They’re not looking for flawless relationships, they’re just looking for real.
Remember that Partner Visas are subjective. There is so much room for interpretation when it comes to evidence and it’s something I see all the time. How can there be one perfect evidence checklist when every couple’s relationship is so different?
Why ‘perfect’ looking applications can still be weak
Sometimes, a couple can have everything they think they need for their Partner Visa. They’ve done all the right statements, provided their evidence, had friends and family write letters of support in their favour. It can seem to be polished and ‘perfect’ but often too polished can mean that your relationship statements don’t sound personal enough, or your evidence is provided but with no clear explanation.
You can technically tick all the boxes but not actually tell your love story in a way that’s easy to understand. Trying to be ‘perfect’ can also then involve having everything run through AI (which I spoke about a couple weeks ago). That’s not perfection, that’s just mechanical.
Real relationships don’t have to be perfect to work
Australian Partner Visa legislation is complex. Immigration understands (and they have legislation and policy that considers) not all couples live together, finances aren’t always 50/50, cultural or religious backgrounds influence how relationships operate.
These situations aren’t really the problem – although some couples are quickly put off lodging a Partner Visa because they think their relationship isn’t ‘perfect’ enough to be successful.
